New records were set by the Olympic athletes in Spain and by the participants of the Rappahannock County Library’s Summer Reading Program, which celebrated the Olympics.
Following the Olympic tradition of reaching for the gold, Reading Team members reached for it and read to become gold-medal readers. They read 2,827 books during the eight weeks of the summer reading program. The total surpassed the previous record by more than 1,000 books.
The final program, “Winners One and All,” was presented by Jim Tucker and Mimi Butler of Puppets by Pizzazz. In keeping with that theme, all of the Reading Team members were presented with certificates of achievement and prizes.
In recognition of the Reading Team’s achievement, John Conry of the Rappahannock National Bank presented a check to Mrs. Elizabeth Jones, children’s librarian.
The bank pledged to donate $1 per book read up to 1,000 in supporting the library and encouraging children to read. Grand prizes were also awarded.
Much excitement was generated this summer because every participant could choose which grand prize he wanted to try to win. Eleven prizes were available, ranging from books to puzzles to T-shirts.
