An increased emphasis will be placed on health in the workplace during this year’s Alive and Kicking week.
“Most people are part of a medical plan offered by their employer, so work is a good place to start living healthy,” said Ayers, who works with businesses throughout the year to educate employees about health issues and work-related injuries.
“With health care costs on the rise, there’s now more incentive for employers to stress health at work,” she said. “Medical plan premiums reflect the number of claims submitted by a company. It’s a dollars and cents thing now.”
To promote healthy living at worksites around the county, Alive and Kicking is incorporating a number of activities to involved the business community. About thirty area businesses already have agreed to participate.
The Tour De Virginia, a board game race around the state, will pit businesses against each other in some healthy competition designed to show employees how to do healthy things at work.
Points earned by companies for things its employees do advance them around the board in a fictitious trek around Virginia. Points are given for things that improve nutrition, exercise or mental health, and reduce stress. The winning small and large businesses will win the title of Healthiest Business and receive awards and recognition.
