Americans are diagnosed daily with cancer, but the two most common cancers, breast cancer for women and prostatic cancer for men, have a very high cure rate, if detected early.
Breat cancer is the most common lifethreatening cancer, striking 150,000 American women and claiming 44,000 lives every year. Eventually, one woman in 10 will get the disease. But there is one step proven to reduce deaths from breast cancer mammography, a screening test that takes special X-ray pictures of the breast. Early detection provides the best opportunity to treat breast cancer successfully.
“Every woman is at risk for breast cancer, and risk increases with age,” said Ava Paden, a Reach to Recovery volunteer with the American Cancer Society. “By following a simpy three-step early detection program, many women could save their own lives.”
Women need to learn the facts about breast cancer, and to join with their physicians in monitoring their health. The American Cancer Society recommends the following three-step early detection program:
