For the second year running, Bay Cockbum drove home the victor in the featured Ben Venue timber race for owner-riders at the March 28 Rappahannock Hunt Point-toPoint.
Heavy weekend rains deteriorated course conditions at Thornton Hill Farm for very deep footing, but no falls occurred in the day’s eight events, and some of the spring’s best series racing took place over the mud-bathed hillsides.
The final decision to hold the races was made at 7 a.m. Sunday morning following heavy thunder showers Saturday night. As a result only about 20 percent of the normal crowd was on hand.
Although the race course was soft, the horses did not churn it into a muddy soup.. The same could not be said of the parking areas.
Nearly every horse trailer had to be towed by tractor to its parking place on top of the hill. When the races were over the path back out for the vans and trailers was a vast sea of impassable mud.
Passenger cars had nearly as much trouble and many emerged onto the highway covered' with mud.
