The Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department was an important part of our Hospice team Monday morning and we are very grateful they were. The roads were treacherous at 2 a.m. when I ventured out the morning after the Blizzard of ’93 to assist a family whose loved one had just past away.
I am a Registered Nurse for Hospice of the Rapidan and it is not unusual to head out at that hour of the morning to be with a family. We believe this is an important and necessary part of our service.
What was unusual was the several inches of packed snow and ice that covered the roadways. I was glad to have a 4-wheel drive vehicle.
Before I left, my husband, who was not as confident as I. had the foresight to contact the Rappahannock Sheriffs office. He spoke to a dispatcher who helped arrange for on-duty officer, Christopher Williams to meet me at the Amissville Fire Department.
The kind officer escorted me down U.S. 211 and then I rode with him up Route 729. The drifts that had been plowed were deeper than the 4-wheel drive cruiser we were in. I don’t think I would have made it on my own and would have been very nervous trying.
Deputy Williams waited for me at the home for nearly an hour while I assisted the family and then took me back to my truck. Mv respect and appreciation for his help are immeasurable.
The nicest thing is that the Sheriffs Department didn’t have to do this. It is humbling to know that
