Classified as an endangered species, it’s illegal to possess a peregrine falcon. The U.S. population of falcons and some other birds of prey were hit hard by the food-chain effects of pest-killing chemicals like DDT, which have been banned in recent years for domestic use.
“Once the DDT gets into the birds’ fat cells, it makes it very difficult for them to synthesize calcium, and that weakens their egg shells,” San Jule said. “Their eggshells are still a lot thinner than they were in the 1930s and it’s still hard for them to renroduce in the eastern United
