Brunner, because it is the first mountain stage and a lot of attention will be focused on Thornton Gap and Rappahannock County.
The cyclists will start at the Gazebo on Main Street, turn south on Royal Avenue, then loop the downtown area before heading southon Route 340.
The racers will follow U.S. 340 to Luray where they will turn east on U.S. 211 and head for the first of three rated climbs at Thornton Gap.
Climbs are rated 1-4 in degree of difficulty with one the hardest and four the easiest. Stage 5 contains three category climbs: Thornton Gap (2); Swift Run Gap (2); and Massanutten (3).
After scaling Thornton Gap, the group of cyclists, known as the peloton, heads for a sprint line in Sperryville. Sprint lines are special, timed legs of the race.
The race bends south again on Route 231 below Sperryville. Another sprint line occurs in Madison before the riders turn west on Route 230 toward Stanardsville and their second climb at Swift Run Gap. A final sprint line* is set for Elkton on the west side of the Blue Ridge, then comes the long climb to Massanutten and the finish of Stage 5.
