As beneficial as pruning can be, improper pruning can severely damage the tree we are trying to help. While there is no one right w’ay to prune, there are many chances for error.
One of the most common errors in making a flush cut. Despite what the old pruning books (and many new ones) advise, never, ever cut off a branch flush with the stem.
A flush cut on any kind of tree is a severe wound that invites the spread of decay-causing pathogens within the wood.
A proper cut is as close to the main stem as possible, without damage to the small swelling at the base of the branch (the “branch collar” or “trunk collar”). Do not leave a “stub” of wood beyond the branch collar.
The best time to prune apples is after leaf fall and before the leaves appear in spring. Avoid pruning during leaf formation or leaf fall.
