FRONT ROYAL — Tour DuPont officials came to town last Wednesday to unveil the course for the cycling race’s fifth stage, starting at the Gazebo on Main Street, passing through Rappahannock County and ending 100 miles later at Massanutten Ski Resort.
“There’s a reason we’re having all this rain now,” said Front Royal Mayor Stan Brooks during his welcoming remarks at the press conference, "That’s because May 10 is going to be a sunny day. I’ve passed a resolution that it’s going to be a day you’ll always remember...”
“We are excited about the tour being here in this beautiful part of the country,” said Jerry Summers of DuPont.
Summers outlined the media plan for this year’s race, highlighting the daily ESPN television coverage and a national coverage campaign.
Eighteen international racing teams have signed on for the '93 edition of America’s best cycling race, including the new WordPerfect® team, ranked second in the world and featuring Mexican Raoul Alcala, ranked fourth among professional cyclists.
American Greg Lemond will not defend his title this year, but promises to return to the race in 1994.
