He does not have the money this year to hire all of the maintenance personnel nor all the Park Rangers he needs. How to meet the needs of the Park and its requirement to serve all the people without causing too great an impact on surrounding communities is the core problem.
Another item on the agenda is the related lands study, an ongoing review of the lands that border the existing Park and lie within the originally proposed boundary. The purpose of the review is to identify those lands that fit the Park’s mission (and those that do not).
Park neighbors on both sides of the Blue Ridge want to give land to the Park from time to time. This survey, completed for Rockingham County, will provide the data Park officials need to evaluate proposed gifts of land.
Some landowners, especially in Rockingham and Madison counties, do not want the Park to grow by any means, including gifts. That tension spilled over in the last session of the General Assembly.
