by Cockbum’s wife Chrissy. In just his first year over timber, Thanks Henry accounted for this third seasonal score by beating the top-class owner-rider field by four lengths. The gray Virginia-bred 9-year-old more regularly serves as Cockburn’s staff horse as he hunts both the Loudoun and Goshen hounds.
“He has continued to impress us with his heart,” said Cockbum following his popular triumph. “The competition today was tough, but Henry ran real handily on this course.”
The rolling, mountainous Thornton Hill course hosted a group of five competing for the coveted Ben Venue trophy, including' Topeador, who retired the trophy as three-time winner of the race in 1991.
Henry Wood’s 12-year-old Topeador just got beat in the Feb. 20 Casanova Cup by Thanks Henry. Topeador and Thanks Henry each won separate timber events at the March 7 Blue Ridge races.
Their meeting at Rappahannock was much anticipated, and as an added bonus, stakes-placed Snow Maker, third in last year’s Maryland Hunt Cup and winner at the Grand National, chose the Sperryville race for his ’93 debut.
