Belle Meade Camp in Sperryville was the site for a very excited group of handicapped adults for the last two weeks.
The campers are residents from Culpeper, Madison, Fauquier and Orange counties, who participate in the day program “Bridges,” sponsored by the Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services Board. Mike Smith is the coordinator of the day program. None of the campers had been on any kind of summer vacation.
Mr. Smith was looking for a camp which he could afford to send his group using money he received from an Easter Seals grant. One camp told him that he could afford to send just two campers for the amount of money he had to spend. He then met with Susan Hoffman, proprietor of Belle Meade Camp in Sperryville, and asked if she could develop a program, which she did.
During the two weeks, everyone spent three hours or so at the camp, arriving on vans around 10:45 a.m. Different activities were planned, including nature walks, drawing, swimming in the pool, and a trip to the Hughes River for a picnic lunch. They also did some hay bale jumping. Ms. Hoffman also had help from Michael Biniek and Lynne Barfield as camp staff.
