There seems to be a lot of confusion as well as some bad feding about the new fire levy. 1 would like to take this opportunity to explain more exactly what the levy entails as well as the fairly drastic need for it.
The fire and rescue companies of the county requested a total of $275,587 from the county to cover the Fire and Rescue Association budget, including small equipment upgrade and, for the first time, to cover operating expenses.
The Fire and Rescue Association then suggested that the Board of Supervisors use the fire levy system already set up in the Code of Virginia to collect the monies to fund its request. The Board came back with a levy of three cents per $100 on assessed real estate (before land use values are applied) and a 20 cent per $100 increase on personal property tax.
