Starting along the head of the stretch, runners in the first race there will go two miles, once around. The fifth and final leg of the series will run over 2 1/2 miles.
“The varied distances are a real test for horses in their novice year,” said Cheltenham racecourse manager Peter McNeile from his track office. “There is a very large group of legitimate novice hurdlers over here this season, and 1 hear that a number of American horses are seriously considering making the trip. It will be a good series.”
The five-races are open to 3year-olds and up, with weights per age except for multiple winners. Three-year-olds carry 135 in each of the American races, with 4year-olds toting 145, and 150 pounds on the older runners.
The owner of the horse that accumulates the most points by running in all the American races will be presented the Cheltenham Perpetual Trophy.
For the third time, this year a connected series of three maiden Sport of Kings qualifiers over hurdles are also slated on the calendar. The first takes place Sept. 16, over the natural brush course at St. James Farm in Chicago. The second maiden will be held Oct. 28 on
