to their course, or sometimes, the course itself.

The Fairfax Races, for instance, which open the Commonwealth’s fall racing season, are run in support of the lovely Belmont Plantation grounds in Ashbum. The historic mansion and rambling meadow that surrounds the ante-bellum house provide a green belt of sorts, a buffer against impending development that presses ever westward as Washington, D.C. expands.

Likewise, the Virginia Fall Races support their Glenwood Park home in Middleburg; the Morven Park Races the Westmoreland Davis Memorial Foundation at the Leesburg estate; the International Gold Cup supports the Meadow Outdoors Foundation which helps keep Great Meadow in The Plains open year-round for outdoor activities.

Steeplechasing has proven to be a big sport with a big heart. The participants provide healthy outdoor competition in the greatest of green spaces, while at once benefiting the very areas that keep the land open.
