They were not disappointed on that muggy Sunday as Serena’s Song trounced a field that included Derby, Preakness and Belmont contenders.
She powered though the stretch, increasing her lead with every quickening stride. She won by two lengths, as easy as she liked.
The magnificent bay graced the winner’s circle — poised like a fashion model, playing to the cameras and acknowledging her public.
The racing fans on the Jersey Shore were not disappointed that day.
However, many in attendance saw the show but missed its message. There was another Serena’s Song just across the street from the track that would carry the hopes and dreams of far more than horseplayers that day.

I climbed down from the rickety wooden television platform, weaved my way through the dwindling crowd and headed for the front gates of Monmouth Park.
As 1 walked across the press parking lot, Salty Roberts, a bornagain Christian evangelist who has become as much a part of life at Monmouth as the racing itself, called over to me: “Bless ya darlin’.”
