This is but a small part of the problem, however. The big problem is personnel. As people have become much busier in their personal lives, the time and energy to devote to volunteer work has decreased. Demands for services have increased as have state mandates for training and recertification of fire and rescue personnel. Additionally, volunteers have to spend even more time on fund raising to help keep services available to our communities. This has been very tough on the volunteers.
As with all volunteer organizations, there is a core group that carries the majority of the burden — fund raising, running calls, training, maintaining equipment and grounds. Because of these things if has become more and more difficult to recruit and retain volunteers to help shoulder this very important responsibility for the safety and welfare of our respective communities. It must be remembered that the same volunteers who help do all these things are taxpayers also
