Sue’s opponent supported the Governor in foolishly turning down millions of dollars in federal funding from Goals 2000. Teachers know we need the funding to achieve those goals and make our children competitive. We know Goals 2000 is locally based and non-directive. We know 48 other States have opted in to Goals 2000 and Virginia’s tax payers have paid their share. Sue will work to get that money back.
Sue’s opponent scorns the idea that the rural counties of the 31st District are being short changed on State funding of education because land is valued at its highest and best use in the composite index. If the lower “land use” tax base were used instead of the highest possible land value, our percentage of State funding could increase markedly. Sue is already studying the possibility. All tax payers should appreciate that.
Sue’s opponent introduced charter school legislation to force local governments to use their thin budgets to support unaccredited schools and teachers. Sue would oppose such wasteful nonsense.
Jay KaUen’s defenders say money can’t buy education. Maybe not, but education can be starved to death for lack of money, and if he had had his way last year, that would have happened.
