Situation
To the Editor:
It’s been a wonderful experience to send my innocent five-year-old off to school to begin her education and enhance her social skills.
However, on the first day of the fourth week of school, she brings home a letter that states a BB pistol was found on a student last week. We, as parents, were assured that the pistol never made it out of the bookbag, nor was anyone threatened or injured. Another student notified, and appropriate person and all was well.
I applaud the child who stood up for the safety and well-being of the other students. But if the pistol never made it from the bookbag, how did another child know it was there? Even though it was in the bookbag, apparently it was either seen by Others or the guilty party bragged about it.
Was this letter supposed to offer comfort to parents and other students? I personally don’t find any comfort or assurance in the fact that any weapon made it’s way into a school!
If a BB pistol can be brought to school, so could a 357. Would other students be as brave about reporting to a teacher or administrator? Would they succumb to peer pressure or being threatened instead?
