may be opening the door to other applications to use property in the county in ways that are not in the best interests of Rappahannock residents or our rural environment.
The school has a temporal approval until Sept. 1 of this year to operate with 40 students on Lorin Maazel’s farm. At the hearing, Mr. Maazel was asking for permission to increase the size of the school to 115 students and use a bam on one of his properties as a permanent school site.
During the hearing, we were told repeatedly in comments made by Mr. Maazel’s representatives that approval had already been given to expand the institution to 75 students.
Please let your readers be informed that, in fact, it was learned after the hearing that no such approval to 75 students had ever been made.
I ask that the News report if any misrepresentations were deliberately made the night of the hearings on the matter of prior approval of 75 students and to also print a retraction of the statement that was incorrectly attributed to me.

My letter to you last week
was more of an informative letter to explain the position of the people in reference to the location of the school. I feel compelled to write this letter and express a concern for being given misinformation.
County Administrator John McCarthy insisted that 75 students had already been established in 1997. He stated that any discussion of this matter would be a moot point, no matter how strong the opposition from the audience might be. I think it should be clear to Mr. McCarthy now that hfe gave misinformation to the people.
Mr. McCarthy has apologized and said this was entirely his fault. I disagree once again. He is not the person that started the number 75, I believe is was Mr. Baumgardner at the Feb. 22 meeting of the Rappahannock Planning Commission.
Quote: The original special exception permits, said Maazels attorney Doug Baumgardner, allowed for a temporary site for the school with a capacity of 30 students, which was later increased to 40. (Rappahannock News Feb. 23)
This site was temporary he noted, because the school was to move to a permanent site in Castleton Meadows with a capacity of 75 full time students, but the permanent site is not yet ready. I feel the oversight is Mr. Baumgardner’s and not that of John McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy’s apology is accepted and we would like to hear from Mr. Baumgardner.
It is hard to believe that out of all the people there to petition for more students, Mr. Maazel, Mr. Clifton and Mr. Baumgardner, not one of them had a clue that the numbers were wrong, just the same as the location of the school.
I submitted a letter two years ago in protest of the location of this school and informed the Board of Supervisors, the Rappahannock County Code said that a private school had to be on a major collector and was told they did not have a definition of a major collector,
