name “speedwell.” The most interesting is that the word is a corruption of “spit-well.” In England — and no doubt, in America — a brew was made from the plant to relieve coughs and act as an expectorant. So — spit-well. Makes sense to me. Maybe I should have brewed up some “spit-well” to relieve my cough instead of spending so much for a concoction I bought at the drug store.
On a cold and overcast morning in mid-March after a night of wind and rain, I went out to pick a bit of Veronica to verify my identification. I found it to be Veronica persica. (Persica means “of Persia.” Is that where the plant originated?)
