Metcalfe and Siccardi placed second and fourth, respectively, in original oratory. In this category, the student delivers from memory an original speech of up to ten minutes, using several current sources and quoting not more than 150 words. Subjects for orations are varied, but must involve something that “troubles” the student enough to research and write persuasively about it.
The subject of Metcalfe’s speech was partial-birth abortion; Siccardi’s involved the movie industry’s R-rating.
Approximately 400 Virginia high school students competed in ten forensics categories at the state tourney. Single, double and triple A schools all were represented, each competing in its respective division.
Although there are few opportunities to compete after the state tourney, Blubaugh qualified earlier in March for the Catholic Forensics League (CFL) national tournament, which will take place in Rochester, N Y., Memorial Day weekend. Metcalfe is a first alternate at the CFL tourney.
