kerchief. Another version states that the image of the face of Christ was imprinted. The word “veronica” is derived from two Latin terms meaning “true image,” so the second version seems more appropriate. It’s a lovely story.

Why were the Veronicas — some are considered to be invasive weeds — brought to America? Many of these plants accompanied settlers as seeds to be planted in the New World for their medicinal properties. Others were used as herbs in cooking, while most, it seems, were accidental and arrived clinging to the great stones used as ballast in sailing ships. The tiny seeds of the Veronicas were also included in shipments of seeds of plants for food. At any rate, they are here and will remain so — like us.
