the quirks of a older home to be endearing. “Our house had the usual cracks and holes that any old house will typically have. We even learned to live with the fact that we could see under the kitchen cabinets and out through the backyard,” she laughed.
But the Walker’s house needed more than cosmetic changes; it needed major structural repairs. The foundation and the roof were in poor condition, so they decided to bite the bullet and proceed with renovating. “We had been thinking about it for a long time,” Jayne said. “I had put it off for years because I knew it would be major but at least it gave me time to prepare.”
The couple elected to rewire the house in order to handle the new fixtures and appliances. The addition they are working on will eventually double the size of their home. They are adding bedrooms, a basement and a family room.
The Walkers decided to do all the work at once instead of piecemeal because it would be less expensive in the long run, but with all this work planned, it proved impossible to live in the house during restoration. All utilities had to be cut off and windows were taken out during the coldest months of the year.
