• Did you know that March is Women’s History Month? Women through the ages have made major contributions to the arts, medicine, science and more. Harriet Tubman, Florence Nightingale, Eleanor Roosevelt and Madame Curie are just a few examples. Take time to discuss some of these incredible achievements with your children.
• Fourth to seventh grade students at RCES were treated to a multi-media presentation last week about the perils of immigrating from another country and entering the United States near the beginning of the 20th century.
Many came to this country looking for freedom; others were looking for jobs. We were in the midst of an industrial revolution and factory owners needed workers. Other immigrants came expecting to find great wealth and were, more often than not, disappointed.
The program dealt with the passage on ship across the ocean, the manner of processing immigrants once they reached Ellis Island and the tragedies associated with working in “sweat shops”.
