White oak is a strong, heavy wood good for fuel. The acorns can be roasted and their bitterness leached out in baskets in streams.

Hickory saplings were used for barrel hoops. Put on while green, they tighten as they dry and worked as well as iron hoops.

Sassafras is highly fragrant. Its young leaves can be dried and are used in file gumbo. The aromatic twigs were used as perches in chicken coops to deter mites. They served the same purpose in bedsteads. The bark of the roots makes sassafras tea, once thought to

cure just about anything.
