I think they understood.
I can’t tell you how filled with joy I was when my wife hollered out one day, “Stormy has something in her mouth!”
And sure enough, that girl had caught a mouse!
“That’s a good sign!” I said.
It wasn’t the target, but it showed that she understood what she was supposed to do.
Then — oh, it was a day of days! — we came home to find Comet with something in her mouth. And from its tiny, digging paws and its snout, we could tell that she had caught and killed a mole. Or a vole. ^ Who cares, really? She had ambushed one of the enemy, and she had taken no prisoners, if you catch my drift.
I was so proud! “Come to poppa, baby!” I said with glee.
And now the weather’s getting warmer, and the girls are out almost all the time. And I can go to sleep every night knowing that I’m one day closer to ridding my life of the only problem I have.
I know that soon our yard will overflow with flowers of all kinds. And these cats, what will they get out of it?
If they do their jobs, these girls can sleep on my bed.
