Sourwood blossoms make excellent honey and are found in July. The twigs have no terminal bud like other trees so, the tree only grows out — giving a natural curve at the end of each branch. This curved wood was prized for sled runners. It would be cut in the light of the moon in January and left to age for a year.
Witch hazel flowers in fall and can keep its seeds in small capsules up to a year. The seeds then pop out and can be thrown up to 30 feet.
Catalpa flowers have visible bee guides in their throats. The catalpa caterpillar they attract makes excellent _ fish bait.
Walnut is a source of food and beautiful wood. Dogwood wood is so hard it was used for weaving shuttles (also called “dogs”).
Honey locust has a sweet sap in its seed pods. Many wild animals relish honey locust pods. The natural sugar attracts wild yeasts, as does persimmon fruit. The two were combined to make locust or persimmon beer. As not all wild yeasts are friendly, Bell does not recommend this recipe.
Sycamore fruits, with the fuzz removed, made a natural button with its fibrous stem as the thread.
