Joseph Maio, her husband, is the founder of Voters to Stop Sprawl, a political action organization that successfully mobilized a voters’ revolt against rapid growth that resulted in the election of eight new members to the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors in 1999. That county board is now trying to fashion ways to slow down the spread of sprawl in Loudoun.
