only citizen of Castleton whose opinion matters?” This is how it appeared to me at the recent meeting of the Rappahannock County Planning Commission. Mr. Maazel, with his attorney and building contractor, sat in comfortable chairs in the front of the room, right up at the table with the public officials, while the rest of the citizens of Castleton sat back on the benches. The citizens’ protests that the school threatens their rural way of life were brushed aside by Maazel and his attorney as unimportant and inaccurate. The desires of one person with wealth and influence threatened to prevail over the desires of the many.
So what happened to democracy? Is Rappahannock County a part of the great traditions that founded this country, or has it become a fiefdom?
