Four Rappahannock County High School public speaking students finished among the best in the state at the Virginia High School League (VHSL) state tournament on Saturday, March 25. The state tournament was held at Charlottesville High School.
Seniors Ian Blubaugh, Sara Dodd-Henze and Rebecca Metcalfe placed second in their respective categories; junior Tatiana Siccardi, fourth. A fifth RCHS contestant, senior Allison Baker, competed in three preliminary rounds but did not qualify for the final round, which involves the top six speakers in each category. All five students previously had earned berths to the state competition by placing in the top three at district and regional tournaments.
For Blubaugh it was a second state appearance; he finished fifth in foreign extemporaneous in 1999 and second on Saturday. Extemporaneous involves current events; students draw a topic and then have 30 minutes to prepare a seven minute speech.
