The Waldorf curriculum is music and arts based, and its elements are blended to enhance the lessons of one subject with the skills learned in another. History texts, for example, are nonexistent, but the students create their own from their lessons and readings, and do so with illustrations and calligraphy to produce personal texts that are reminiscent of Medieval illuminated writings.
At Sunday’s Open House, visitors will see examples of the children’s work, talk with Hearthstone teachers and parents, and tour the school classrooms and grounds. They will see, for example, the castles created by sixth-graders for their study of the Medieval era, the shields and banners that adorn their classroom, and the illuminated manuscripts that they have prepared. Visitors can see illustrations of Norse deities created by fourth graders, or calendars prepared by younger students.
