Calculating major repair and replacement costs on a fictitious house over 30 years, housing economist Robert Sheehan, who conducted a Wall Street Journal study, estimated the following costs.

The analysis assumed the home was priced at $38,300 new in 1968 and is worth $250,200 today. The report used standard industry sources to estimate the lifespan of various components as well as the cost of labor and materials.
