John Delmare, owner of Rappahannock Cellars, brings his winegrowing experience from California to Virginia. He believes his mission of “careful tending of the vines and exacting knowledge of the cellar” will make an important contribution to the wine industry in Virginia.

According to Delmare, wine making in Virginia is not for the “single-styled” wine-maker, or the “lighthearted”. The vintner must be intuitive and flexible when dealing with the ever-changing climate conditions in Virginia.

Rappahannock Cellars is a state of the art winery located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The site is seventy miles west of Washington, D.C., and six miles south of Front Royal.

The Delmare family planted the first vineyard in 1999, built the winery and produced their first vintage in 2000, and opened the tasting room to the public in 2001.
