The following Saturday, on Sept. 28, the Blue Ridge Civil War Round Table offers its annual Civil War bus tour, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s trip is to sites of Civil War history in Rappahannock and Warren Counties. The first half of the tour will focus on marches, encampments, and engagements in Rappahannock county including the skirmish at Battle Mountain, in which General George A. Custer attacked a major column of Lee’s retreating Confederate army as it approached Culpeper to regroup after its debacle at Gettysburg. Then the tour will cross Chester Gap and learn about Jackson’s stunning victory in the Battle of Front Royal in May 1862, the dragging deaths of five of Mosby’s men in reprisal for guerilla activities, and the secret work of spy Belle Boyd as it tours sites in Front Royal.
