The state and national push to impose tough standards and accountability in public schools has its flaws. However, this momentous change in education has caused renewed dedication to the admirable goal of higher expectations for all. To their great credit, Rappahannock educators have already been largely successful in helping students meet Virginia’s SOLs.
As if SOLs weren’t enough to tackle, the staff has simultaneously undertaken to apply the Effective Schools model. The research underlying this has shown that student achievement flourishes in schools exhibiting seven key traits: high expectations, focused mission, safety and order, strong instruction, opportunity to learn; frequent assessment, and strong homeschool relations. To achieve maximum effect, everyone connected with students must make these conditions a priority — in each school, for every learner.
Susan Payne, who teaches RCES first graders, returned from Oxford with an expanded perspective, “that really values the various roles people play in educating children. It was wonderful being surrounded by people who truly love the art of education, not to mention staying in the most beautiful and surreal place I have ever visited.
