Overall the growing season has been “decent” so far though a late ripening one. The mild winter followed by the late spring frosts hurt some growers and some varieties. Black raspberries and peaches were hit hard at Muskrat Haven. Frost got the plums at High Places Orchards and Moore’s Orchards, and the “maybe-once-in-every-five-years” apricots were in bloom at Moore’s Orchards at the time of the April frost, so no apricots again. The frost also got Goat Hill’s July tomatoes.
But there are many local growers who have some fresh, “not anything like store-bought” fruit and vegetables available for sale. What follows is only a taste of what’s coming for July.
High Places Orchards
Ed Streapy’s operation is PYO with apples, peaches, nectarines and for the first time, raspberries — both the early variety in July and later in the fall. Sorry, no plums this year. The frost got them.
Some of the apple varieties coming in mid-July are the Williajns (tart and sweet), Gala, Honeycrisp, and the Gingergold.
The early white peaches will be ready for the picking soon.
Starting in mid-July, High Places Orchards will be open six days a week from sun-up to sun down. On Sundays, the orchard opens after church. Mr. Streapy suggests it’s a good idea to call before coming. 6355537. The orchards are located on Winesap Lane in Huntly.
Roy’s Farm Market
Roy’s Farm Market is owned by Roy Alther. Right now Mr. Alther has fresh-picked green beans and both yellow and green squash available. He said the fruit is starting to ripen with the early apples coming in — the . Lodi first followed by Summer Rambo. The first of his plums comes in next week with one variety right behind the next through August.
Fresh-picked blueberries are available now. The first two varieties of his summer peaches should be ripe next week: Hale Havens and the early yellow peach, the Free Reds.
Roy’s Farm Market keeps more or less regular hours: 9 to 1:30 Monday through Friday; 9 to 6:30 on Saturday and Sunday. The market is in Sperryville off US 211, 987-8636
