The Rappahannock News regards these issues to be
of bedrock importance to the character and heritage
of Rappahannock County and takes these consistent editorial positions toward fairly reflecting the attitude of its people.
1. Growth must be planned and controlled through strong, clear and strictly enforced zoning regulations which will further Rappahannock’s character, environment, powerful beauty, open space conservation program and the quality of rural and village life of its people. Any new development must be reconciled with the county’s Comprehensive Plan which serves as the essential road map to our future.
2. Education standards should be gradually raised and facilities upgraded in recognition that quality schooling is a key to the future character of our children.
3. Encourage low impact new small business consistent with the proven successful Rappahannock economic experience. Tburism and agriculture, new alternative farming should be strongly supported since they generate revenue without the attendant major public services demanded by other industries. Clean non-manufacturing ; should be actively sought to provide new employment ^opportunities for our residents under conditions which assure that these business are self-supporting, not a burden upon the tax base.
4. Volunteerism, a hallmark of the people in this proud and independent county, shall be celebrated as a ; continuing measure of vigorous community activities, of . the will of the heart and the fierce spirit of the Rappahannock heritage.
5. In recognition that none of these objectives may be ’ realized without fully, representative local government, this newspaper will remain politically independent and independently uncover any abuse of the public trust by ; public officials.
