Based on this and his own experiments, Mesmer developed the theory of “Animal Magnetism”.
Benjamin Franklin was part of a commission that was appointed to investigate Mesmer’s claims.
The commission concluded that Mesmer was a fr&ud and that “all cures are based on imagination.”
Nevertheless, his name has given us the word “mesmerize”.
Dr. Braid, a British physician, used eye Fixation on objects to induce hypnosis and gave his technique the name “hypnosis” from the Greek word for “sleep”.
Dr. Esdaile, a physician practicing in India in the 1800’s, was the first to use hypnosis for anesthesia during surgery.
French neurologists Charco and Bernheim were the next investigators of hypnosis.
They established the Nancy School, which uses suggestion. Modern hypnotists use this method. Sigmund Freud studied under Charco and Bernheim and used hypnosis in his early practice.
He later switched to free association.
