While the younger generation, as a whole in America, has lost the sense of pride in choosing farming as their lifestyle, we have an opportunity to elevate it in status and use it to our advantage. It is becoming more unique in Virginia than Td like to think. City folks flock to our farm stands. It calls to us at our roots. It feeds our families. It sustains our sense of history and enhances the natural beauty that exists all around us in Rappahannock.
Over the years, the economic benefits of the urban professional status have been elevated to greater importance in our society at large. Hence, we see reflections of this in our own county, apple orchards being destroyed, students returning from college with no job opportunities here to support their new found identity, and landowners struggling to continue valuing their cherished earth with more pressures to sell for a “pretty penny”.
