The Asteroid Belt, where thousands of asteroids are found orbiting around the Sun, separates the inner and outer planets. Asteroids are chunks of rock and metal. Scientists think that they are loose material that never formed into planets.

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. Mercury is named for the Roman messenger god because it quickly appears and disappears from the morning and evening skies.
