There’s a new team in town — the Washington Senators — and they’re playing baseball here in Rappahannock.
With Mark Warner taking up the head coaching duties and Jeff Jenkins and Mike Tupper assisting, the new team is heading for a 30 to 40 game season with five games under their belts already.
Three games were played here in Rappahannock, two in Fredericksburg. According to Mike Tupper, “We’ve won some and lost some.”
The next scheduled game in Rappahannock is July 14 at the high school ball field (behind RCES) at 1 p.m. The Senators will be battling the Central Virginia Sting, a travel team out of Culpeper. The Sting recruits its players from all over central Virginia and the average age is 16.
The Senators play Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) baseball with 15 young people on the team roster so far. Players are 16 and younger with the youngest being at least 12. Unlike the Stings, the average age of the Senators is 14, and all of the players are recruited from within the county.
