Mr. Moore Sr. is guessing hell have yellow peaches in about a week (if the bear don’t get them allL Nectarines are just about ready. He was cradling a just picked nectarine in his hand and it became a gift for me. It would ripen up perfectly in aday or two, he said, as long as I didn’t put it in the fridge. He had sampled one (or two) up in the orchard and found them very tasty. Moore's Orchard is open daily, 675-3553.
Jenkins Orchard
According to Jerry Jenkins, the cherries are gone by now, his plums got frozen out, and he has no more Lodi apples, but he does have nectarines, and the “really flavorful” Red Havens peaches will probably be ready around July 10. He expects the Rambo, the Jersey Mac and the Paula Red (all apples) to also be ripe sometime in the second week of July.
The pears and many more varieties of apples and peaches will ripen as the season heads into fall.
All of the fruit is “fresh-picked” — no PYO. The green and white packing shed will open with the Red; Havens and hours vary but are basically seven days a week from 9 until 6 p.m. — until the season ends.. Located in Woodville on Yancey Road (Route 621), 987-8192. Waterpenny Farm (CSA)
Rachel Bynum and Eric Plaksini grow and market their vegetables a little differently. The CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. \ Most all of their produce is grown for and sold to their “shareholders” — who pay in advance for 22 weeks of “fresh, ecologically grown vegetables.”
They also sell a limited amount from the farm after 4 p.m. on Friday or Saturday. Currently Waterpenny Farm has squash, cucumbers, chard, basil, and flowers with tomatoes and eggplant coming in shortly Waterpenny Farm is on US 211 in Sperr>wille, 987-8567.
