Virginia’s
gone batty

Ask most anyone in Virginia what the state bird is and a quick response, “Cardinal” would be given.
The same would occur with the state flower and tree — the dogwood.
However, dig a little deeper and the response time would lag a bit for the lesser known state representatives. As of July 1, 2005, the Commonwealth will have a state bat — the Virginia Big-Eared bat.
The Virginia Big-Eared bat will now join the ranks of some of Virginia’s other celebrated critters including the state dog (American fox hound), a state insect (tiger swallowtail butterfly), a state fish (brook trout), a state shell (oyster), and a state fossil (Chesapecten jeffersonius).
