criteria for ranking applications gives extra weight to farms that provide the landowner’s principal occupation and income.
The county contribution is a negotiable dollar amount, usually around $20,000 per development right. Additional funding may be available from state and federal grants, and private donations from individuals and foundations.
The response of the farming community has been encouraging. The Farmland Preservation Program committee recently approved the purchase of development rights bn 300 acres owned by a fourthgeneration farming family.

Conservation
Easements
A conservation easement is a legal agreement that limits the future development of the farmer’s property in order to preserve natural, scenic, or open-space area. The agreement does so by restricting industrial, commercial, or residential uses of the land. Farmers may still build on their land, sell it, or pass it on to their heirs.
