There is a lovely walk along the Appalachian Trail that will take you past the remnants of a 1950’s Shenandoah Park wayside, through a 100-year-old apple orchard, up the gradual ascent of Dade’s Mountain, along an old dirt wagon road, and past a quarry used to harvest stone for the Skyline Drive and the rock walls along the drive.
The walk begins at 14.2 miles from the Front Royal entrance station to Skyline Drive. After you enter the Park at the Front Royal station, drive south along Skyline Drive, passing several overlooks, the Compton Peak parking lot (10.1 miles from the entrance station), and the Jenkins Gap parking lot (12.4 miles). At 14.2 miles from the entrance station, you will see a grassy area on the right side of Skyline Drive, with a 4’ concrete post and, behind it, a tree with a 2” by 6” white blaze on it. Park here to begin the walk,
The 2” by 6” white blaze indicates that the trail is the Appalachian Trail, and you will find these qp trees throughout the whole trail, from Georgia to Maine.
The one-way walk is 1.7 miles. If you have two cars, you can leave the second car at the Jenkins Gap parking lot (an asphalt-paved lot for about 14 cars). If you have only one car, you will have to retrace your walk, making the total walking distance 3.4 miles.
(If you enter Shenandoah Park from the Thornton Gap entrance station on Rt. 211, drive north passing, among several overlooks, the Brown town Overlook on the left after 16.2 miles. The grassy parking area will be on your left at 17.2 miles from the Thornton Gap entrance station.)
