Day School
A group of five students who are members of Wakefield Country Day School’s Model United Nations team traveled to Washington, D.C. this past weekend to compete in the national Academic WorldQuest tournament, an event that tested their knowledge of current events, geography, maps, flags, international cultures, demographics, and global politics. The team, consisting of team captain Allison Russo of Flint Hill, Alec Toth and Cat Toth of Front Royal, Rachel Marx of Strasburg, and Danielle Purtell of Culpeper, earned this unique opportunity by beating twelve larger and more experienced teams at a regional competition hosted by East Carolina University (ECU) in Greenville, North Carolina last November. As the winning team of the East Carolina University competition, the WCDS team earned a 3 day, all expenses paid visit to our nation’s capitol, courtesy of ECU. The weekend included a cruise down the Potomac, a dance, a performance by The Capitol Steps at the Ronald Reagan Building, and the actual competition itself, which took place in the historic Organization of American States building. The tournament drew fifty school teams from throughout the United States, with some students coming from as far away as Alaska and Hawaii.
