is commanding in the role of Paul Ruysesabagina as he must juggle his influence and stockpile of favors and bribes to maintain a tenuous balance as he tries to work both ends against the middle. His bravery in the face of brutal violence is an impressive depiction. Sophie Okonedo, as Paul’s wife Tatiana, gives a strong performance in a demanding role. While she is supportive of her husband and stands by him, she is also concerned for her family and their survival. Nick Nolte, as the UN peacekeeper, does a superb job depicting a man who wants to do the right thing in the war tom country but whose hands are tied by forces and influences outside Rwanda.
This is a film that rivals “Schindler’s List” and “The Killing Fields.” It is a powerful story with dynamic acting. Its raw emotion will bring tears to your eyes. Oscar nominations were bestowed on Cheadle for Best Actor and Okonedo for Best Supporting Actress. Don’t miss this moving and powerful film.
“Hotel Rwanda” is rated PG-13 and contains widespread violence, racial epithets and obscenity. It’s enlightening for high schoolers, but not for middle schoolers. Run time is 121 minutes.
