The School Board discussed this idea and saw some merit in it as Lantz Construction company would be sub-contracting the track project out as it presents a building and engineering challenge not in their realm of construction.
Chairman of the board Wesley Mills (Jackson) said he wanted to work with the Board of Supervisors in a “cooperative spirit” and suggested that each school board member contact their respective supervisor to get a clearer understanding of how he or she feels about the issues, at hand.
Coming down
to a vote
Board members were not in agreement on which way to go and the vote was not unanimous.
School board chairman Wesley Mills was in favor of passing a motion made by Ken Marlor (Stonewall/ Hawthorne) which would eliminate the track and school addition with the objective of reopening bids for the track at a later date.
Both Mills and Marlor voted for this option.
School board members Meredith Gorfein (Hampton) and Rosa Crocker (Wakefield) voted against.
The School Board was now in a stalemate position with two votes for this option and two votes against.
A deciding fifth vote was not possible as Aline Johnson (Piedmont) was not present.
Since Johnson was unable to vote, the issue will be voted on again and decided at the next scheduled school board meeting on April 12.
