MORE REASON
TO LIVE
People who state that they have a religious affiliation are more likely to have moral objections to suicide that prevent them from acting on suicidal thoughts. So says a recent survey of depressed individuals. Those who professed to have religious beliefs were both less likely to have suicidal thoughts than their non-religious peers and were less likely to give in to those thoughts if they did have them. Previous research has shown that religious countries tend to have lower rates of suicide than secular nations. Studies have also shown that a higher degree of religious commitment is associated with less suicidal behavior. Clearly, living within a religious context gives people more reason to live.
